Given it's positioning, I can imagine what the start button does. What about select? Shouldn't the select button be a little....lower?

You don't understand, the reason those exist is so that girls can get their boyfriends away from being glued to video games. The idea is, the guy sees the controller pattern, and is fooled into diving for it. By the time he realizes what's going on, he's away from his precious video games long enough to get laid.
