What if Microsoft succeeded in buying Nintendo. What kind of bastard child do you think would result?

This old article from the register inspired this topic:

I think it's safe to say that it will never happen. Scenarios like these are like bad corporate fan fiction.

That said, I think that the biggest change would be the fact that it would make the console wars a Pepsi/Coke kind of battle where the two giants Nintendosoft and Sony get complacent and innovation dies a bit.

Well, you'd get XBox2 with cool games....b/c you'd have an elimination of Nintendo's console market, port all the games and game development to the XBox2, and then Microsoft would pretty much have the handheld market cornered. What would be interesting would be if Nintendo sold off its console division and stayed on only in the handheld market....hmm, interesting.

The Nintendo Gamebox? The Microsoft XCube?

It'd have good games that were unplayable due to system flakiness.

It looks like Bill Gates is interested in the whole company.....
It makes sense though. I remember the Xbox having trouble penetrating the Japanese market.

Apparently he did try to buy the company. The main shareholder refused.

As much as I love Nintendo's console games, I think they should seriously consider doing this. It's not as if they don't know how to make great games anymore, but their consoles have been teh sux0r the last 2 times around. If it were not for Mario games, Goldeneye, the Zeldas, and a handful of other games, the N64 wouldn't have just been obliterated, it would have been an absolute embarassment to Nintendo, and that's coming from someone that owns a dozen N64 games and loves every one of them. Now we have the Gamecube, which is only doing better than the N64 in terms of going from cartridge to disc. They still do not have the support of leading game companies, and still are tethering on a thin thread of Nintendo staples.

Meanwhile, they are continuing an astounding monopoly on handheld systems, with the Game Gear being the only thing coming the closest to being any sort of competition in the last nearly 2 decades, such a strong monopoly that Sony had resorted to a long wait before they even try to compete. Looking at the next gen handhelds, I have no doubt that Nintendo will keep the monopoly strong, but they might be history in consoles after another substandard one...hopefully for them they can turn things around, but I highly doubt it.

Of course they could also make a powerful handheld (more so than the DS which, IMHO, is underpowered) that is able to hook up to a television/monitor. Sort of a handheld/console hybrid.

You're reading my mind, Wren.
I play my GBA on my tv at home. Of course I run it through the Game Cube.
But I'll bet they pull that rabbit out of the hat in the next 18 months.
And I don't consider the Game Cube a substandard console.

lol, super office assistant brothers! what a shit game that would be, or maybe just annoying ;-)

microsoft are nothing more than a bunch of bastards out to make a buck. the whole world relies on M$ and its really sad. and no matter what apple do they are never going to beat ms because in the end, they just want to make some money too.

however open-source will crush microsoft. slowly but steadily open-source is taking over. m$ is trying to stop it with this TCO FUD shit, but its not its helping much. any smart business can make their own decision. open-source is the future. and m$ will die a painful death.

so microscrewed can go lick my ass

I wouldn't have a problem with it so long as the quality of the games is kept up. Don't get me wrong, I'm with all the people who hate the Xbox (But not because it's made by the evil devil men of Microssoft, because of the lack of quality games) but I still think it's supperior to the GCN. What I'd really like to see is a Nintendo/Sony merger, I think that would do both companies the best, Nintendo would get a great console, Sony would get great games. I would also like to see Nintendo get out of the console market and focus on handhelds, in my opinion the GBA is the best game system out now, far better than the GCN, Xbox, and even PS2.

but what happens when they kill off microsoft's console stuff. there would be just one console company around, which means no competition, which could mean wrose games and higher prices

You never know, i mean, who would have thought a game starring a plumber would be such a hit.

If you cant see that every company in the world is out to make a buck, not just microsoft, that's .... nice. I dont understand everybody's resentment towards Microsoft. The outcry against them these days makes it seem as though they raped someone's mother or something.

Open Source might make a dent in Microsoft's sales and business, but it will be a while before they're done. Just because you know enough to realize that windows is a clunky OS does not make it so that the billions of people that are less gifted when it comes to computers will see the "evil" and switch to something else.

I don't either. Full on Sony mainstream developer support or no, it's a great console, even if it doesn't have as many games. In fact...with the volume of crap that comes out on the PS, that's almost not a bad thing. Not to say all PS games are bad, or all GCN games are great, but jeez. :P

That's true I suppose. With no competition, they could do whatever they wanted, but then I couldn't see Nintendo all by themselves going that route. It's Sony's evil infulence! Ahahahaha!

i remember days when there was a video game monopoly... and the games were actually BETTER than ANY current game out there... part of why i still occasionally mess with emulation...

right now because of the competition, the games are crap, everyone sells to the mainstream, no one sells to the good ol' classics such as me any more...

heh, only 19 and calling myself a classic, that's rich... but i have been playing video games ever since forever... and i miss my classics style, although the games themselves are getting dry... i need new games that follow the same style...

does gamecube have any strategy rpgs? not that i know of... now, there are some cool games for gc, like ssbm, but i'm talking majority here, and the majority of games i would like to see out there are turn-based strategy rpgs with puzzles, and a battle system that actually requires some ingenuity

i don't see ANYONE making such a game anymore

If only there were very many American made goods that we could buy, competitve ones at that. Just look how long it took an American company (Ford) to make a compact car that people aren't embarassed to drive.
