View Full Version : Why is drinking "bad"?

puduhead

K, some reasons why it could be bad? Anyone?

Obviously, don't get drunk and drive. Check.
If drinking makes you abusive to your family or other ppl, than you have a problem. Check.
If you drink at times that end up interfering with your work, that ain't good. check.

Any others?

I'm wondering cuz I'm pretty sauced right now, and I'm feeling good. I was talking to one of my neighbors briefly: which I don't normally do becuz I'm too shy or anti-social.

I'm missing my girlfriend and want the love with her right now - which is good.

I'm watching a movie (it's paused. The Messanger) right now and it's like entertaining and deep and stuff.

Also, I was a little down and didn't feel like eating, cuz I miss Mags so much, but after having a few, I got some food going on. Eating = good. wurd.

Maybe it just depends on the person? I'm a very serious person (which is why I try to use humor all the time to lighten myself up), so drinking makes me relaxed and comfortable. I don't get drunk everyday so that's good, right? so i'm just wondering other ppl's thoughts.

p.s. reason this is in Diaries is cuz it's personal shit about/to me.

Im not accusing, im just conveying information i read today. Its a study, and well studies are notorious for being inaccurate depending on the variables taken incosideration for. Thats why you can present 2 studies on the same thing saying the exact opposite.

Well, basically the readers digest article said that people who drank alot when they were younger were about 10 percent stupider than people who didnt. They found certain cells in the brain were easily killed in a teenager as compared to an adult. But, its a study, and it needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

Understood. I'm 27 and have only been drinking a year. Plus, not to toot my own horn but, losing a few brain cells wouldn't be such a bad idea for me. Sometimes, I'm too smart for my own good, and, simplicity = happiness.

> K, some reasons why it could be bad? Anyone?

Here are a few.

Alcohol is a depressant. Alcohol causes sirosis of the liver. If you BAC reaches a certain point, you can get alcohol poisoning and die. Alcohol is also toxic, hence if you drink 200 proof alcohol it is essentially drinking poison.

It temporarily distorts metabolism, lowers body temperature, numbs nerves, impairs balance/coordination, and I've also heard that alochol becomes like acetone in your digestive track after it is processed by the liver.

Now that I think about all that crap I know about alcohol, am I still gonna drink? You betcha!

Alcohol is fun... weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!

Seriously though, alcohol is great, if enjoyed responsibily, with a designated driver. Personally, I never drink when I'm sad because if I do, I get really depressed and feel just pitiful, but if I'm happy and with friends, alcohol is great and we get completely crazy.

It's funny because alcohol is worse for you than marijuana, yet alcohol is legal.

Alcohol is a drug. It fucks your liver up, and can be addictive (depending on the person).

Plus, being drunk is exactly the same as being high (which should be obvious).

Being high is your brain not fuctioning properly. You act like a retard and can't stand straight because you're fucked up. It might be fun, but it's seriously bad for you. Maybe not short term, but in your older age you'll probably end up with deteriorated motor skills and be one of those old cripples that have to use a walker to get around anywhere.

drugs = bad (don't listen to pacman)
I'm already on caffeine... so I don't think I'll starting drinking alcohol ever.

And that whole thing about a glass of wine a day being good for you is total shit.

The reason why it's good for you is because wine is made from fruit. If you substitute a cupfull or grapes for a cupfull of wine, it will be MUCH better for you.

I hate misleading statements like that.
Did you ever hear the one that says "90% accidents occur within X miles from your home, so always buckle up". well NO SHIT. Where else do you drive you dumb fucks.

Yeah buckling up is a good thing... but I hate misleading shit like that.

Anyway, I'm way off topic now, so I'll stop.

One thing I can tell you is that my brother, having worked in a hospital in a poor neighborhood, has a seething hatred of the alcohol industry, because he's seen countless people who once had potential, but were ruined by their alcohol addiction.

Btw, take a walk through a poor neighborhood and notice the advertisements. The alcohohol industry really does target the less fortunate (and that helps to keep them that way, of course).

Alcohol is insidious. People assume that just because it isn't instantly addictive like crack is, it's not so bad. But in the end it can and frequently does get out of hand, and that leads to the same result as other drugs.

Actually, that's incorrect. A 4oz cup of red wine every day is very healthy for you and not just because it is grape juice. Red wine contains an natural antioxident called Trans-resveratrol which inhibits the ability of plaque to form in your arteries and raises your HDL cholesterol (that's the good cholesterol).

It's a common fact that the French have a lower rate of heart disease than Americans, despite their diet of high-fat food. This has been attributed to the fact that many French people drink a glass of wine each night.

Actually, that's why a single 4oz glass is key. Some scientists even say that 2-3 glasses of the same size a day is good, but all agree that anymore than four is dangerous and raises the risk of cancer and liver disease.

The liver can actually process small quantities of alcohol without significantly harmful effects. It's all in proportion and control.

However, the French liver disease rate is much higher (1 and 1/2 times greater) than the United States, so you do have a point. I guess they need control.

bah. Fast food always gets a bad wrap.

I eat fast food almost everyday. I'm not overweight, my blood pressure is normal, my physical condition is good (I'm getting sore from work, but that will happen regardless of what I eat).

No... you can't live off of fast food... but you can eat it without taking a health hit. It's not like poison or anything *cough*alcohol*cough*. /wwwthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

Good post. Some people know they shouldn't drink. Alcohol, being a depressant is not the best stuff to use to escape from your problems with anyway. People who drink and drive (and continue to do so after getting numerous DUI's) need to be taken off the road before they kill anybody. I've done some stupid things in my life but never something that stupid. Drinking? Yeah, I love beer. Always have. But I don't need it. I'm comfortable with Powerade, water, just about anything. I'm also a firm believer that the hard liquors, vodka, tequila, etc, need to be done in bigtime moderation.
Excess of anything can kill you or make you

First of all pot CAN kill you...smoke enuff of it and your brain fries and you become a vegitable--which in my book is worse than death.

But having said that, I enjoy a few beers everynow and then but I don't drink to get drunk anymore...maybe if I drink a few drinks at dinner with friends or have a few glasses of rum&coke a buzz is welcomed...just not encouraged. Oh well as long as someone isn't driving, raping someone, or beating there loved ones let em drunk.

Hmmm... I don't know about that. I've seen alcoholics recover pretty well, and alcohol kills more brain cells than pot. I'm not sure on everything that pot effects, but it's mostly your short term memory. I know lots of people who smoke pot every day, and they aren't vegitables. /wwwthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

> Alcohol isn't "poison" unless your body can't handle it.

that's true and untrue. Yeah, alcohol is much more harmful to some people than other people.

But EVERYONE is affected by it.

> Fast food is harmful (look at the increasing obesity of the
> USA) not only in weight control, but in other medical
> problems. Then there are the lucky few who have a good
> metabolism that can handle it.

obesity has more to do with people sitting on their ass than what food they eat.

here's the rundown on Americans

- most people that can afford to buy lots of food... do
- in order to buy lots of food, you need a good paying job
- good paying jobs are often desk jobs
- you get 0 excercise from a desk job
- food input needs energy output to counteract (that's what calories are)... you don't do something physical, your body stores the weight.

American's don't eat too much... they just don't work out enough.

Also, there are exceptions to this rule. Some people are born with low metabolism and just are unlucky in that sense.

Fast food, which you say is bad, is really only terrible if:

- you eat lots of it
- you don't work the calories off
- you have a cholesterol problem (fatty meats contain high cholesterol... which ISN'T A PROBLEM for most people. Your body naturally regulates cholesterol. However at a later age, some people can't regulate it as well... then it becomes a problem).

that's it. Other than that, fast food isn't really bad for you.

> Tobbaco may be considdered "poision" but in reality its not,
> if you have a history of lung cancer and a low chance of
> prostate cancer, don't smoke, if you have a history of
> prostate cancer and a low chance of getting lung cancer,
> smoke.

OMG, you're saying Fast food is bad, but cigarettes are ok?

What planet are you on?

if you smoke ANYTHING, you're damaging your lungs. Smoking is an unnatural thing that your body isn't fully equipped to handle. You're lungs can filter out the smoke, but that stuff builds up and it will get to the point where you won't be able to breathe as well as you used to.

Not to mention tobacco is EXTREMELY addictive. It's one of the more addictive drugs around. And it increases your appetite, but it's also a depressant (so you excercise less). People that quit smoking often gain 10 or 20 pounds.

And that's just if you smoke straight tobacco. If you purchase cigarettes, there's a whole slew of shit that the industry adds to it.. like tar (which practically just clings to your lungs), and other drugs to make you more addicted.

Drinking lowers inhibitions (which most people don't have enough of to begin with) . . . Lowered inhibitions lead people to do things they probably wouldn't do if they hadn't been drinking (though, may have been tempted to do) . . . Little tiny "things" that happen when inhibitions are lowered can affect us later on.

For example, I have lost 3 girlfriends as a result of lowered inhibitions (theirs, not my own).

Also, a drunk person will often think they are sober . . . For those who didn't know, being "slightly sloshed" (or tipsy) is the same as being drunk. There are different degrees of being drunk. Only the extremely drunk will ever admit to being drunk (because their condition is so extreme that even they can't deny the obvious).

Anyway, I recall a time that my ex (wasn't an ex at the time) got extremely pissed at me for insinuating that she had had enough to drink. She actually hit me. To prove that she was drunk, I did what I call my "drunk test" . . . I told the following joke . . . a joke so stupid that only a drunk person would find funny:

Q: What does a cow say?
A: Moo.

After hearing the joke, she was laughing uncontrollably to the point that she almost fell out of her chair . . . Even so, she insisted that she was not drunk:-O

Oh, and drinking also:
1) Is expensive
2) Is addictive
3) Messes up your liver
4) Tastes like crap (in my personal opinion)

You may be right. I don't know, I've never been to France, I'm just relaying facts from a study we read about in Health Science.

The fact is that wine has been proven to prevent hardened arteries, now I can't say that it causes magical health benefits because as you stated, it's just one small factor among many others.

I would really like to read some research about the genetic reaction to alcohol, now that would be interesting.

Whoa dude, that's fucked up... but the reason I think that happened was because he started so early when his brain wasn't even finished developing... people who start when they are an adult, or close to being an adult, have little or no permanent effects from it...

> Not to be a spell-checker... but it's 'wine'.

I had a very long day yesterday at work. Can't get into the details because of confidentiality issues, but here's the basics . . . . . 6' 3" (250lb?) guy going after a 5' 8" (210lb?) guy... My job was to get between them (during their fight) until other staff show up...

Surprizingly, I didn't wine during the feud, nor need any whine afterwords:-D j/k

Yeah, that's pretty much the way I feel about the aforementioned alcohol drinks, too. (And alcohol in general.)

Amen brotha man! It sucks that my girlfriend can legally drink in her country but when she comes over here, we can only drink at home cuz she's *only* 19! bah!
