I recently purchased a new computer (motherboard/cpu) and everything is running smoothly except for USB. I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2 and every minute or so the USB keyboard and mouse act as if they are being removed/plugged in. This doesn't affect me normally except when I am writing a document and the keyboard stutters.

I updated to the latest motherboard drivers and this problem persists. Does anybody have any recommendations?

Here are my system specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2600+
MSI KT4AV
256 MB DDR RAM
USB keyboard/mouse

It almost sounds like you have an IRQ problem with to many devices being hooked up to your computer and something in the background is trying to run with the bandwidth used by the keyboard mouse. It also may be your motherboard drivers and/or bios need to be updated since it is common to send out motherboards with unknown glitches in the software. Check out your motherboard manufacturers support page and also go to the device manager and see if there are any IRQ conflicts between your keyboard/mouse and other devices. Good luck. <img src=smilies/thumb.gif>

How many USB devices do you have plugged in?

Another thing to check there (device manager) is the power usage over the USB ports. If there isn't enough power being supplied for what is needed, you may need to look into getting a powered USB hub for the extra power.

*Sighs* It's a VIA chipset. I used to have a KT133 based one with the same problem. Now i'm stuck with another one (last one I was naive, this one was a gift) and after 2-3 years of flawless operation, it's starting to flake out...
