View Full Version : CD ROM Drive Ejecting on its own

So here is a new computer problem that I haven't run into yet.
I'm fixing my boss's computer for him and so far, it's just the random cleanup job (you know the type...600+ spyware, disk needs to be defragged, etc etc). The one thing that is really throwing me for a loop is well...the damn CD-ROM drive ejects on its own!
I replaced the IDE cable but that didn't help. I can't think of what might be causing the problem besides a dead drive. Luckily, I just mapped the CD-ROM drive from my personal computer on his computer so I can install software without any issues.
So...any ideas?

I assume you've done the obvious stuff like virus checking right?

I'm doing it right now, but my gut tells me that it's most likely an issue with the drive itself.

Probably, but you never know.

Remove the drive and pound on it with a hammer. That'll fix yer ejecting problem, for sure <img src=smilies/magbiggrin.gif>

I do believe I've heard in the past of a virus or worm that did have the side effect of randomly ejecting the CD drives in your PC. Unfortunately, I can't recall the name of it though.
It very well could be an issue with the drive itself however, because my old DVD drive started doing that every so often before it finally bit the bullet.

I'm leaning more and more towards a dead drive. The old one was freaking out when I was in the boot menu, so I replaced it with one I had around the house. So far, no issues.

I dunno. I've never heard of a dead drive doing that. Not saying it's not possible, but I am in agreement with Mega Man Juno.
I've seen three or four different virus that can cause the CD to act that way.
I had one on my old P233 that randomly ejected Zip Disks.

I say its the drive. I had a CD-ROM drive that once you gave it power (nothing else connected) it would open and close by itself untill you disconected the power.
