Well, speak up! Jim Lehrer is indeed an awesome moderator, and when the camera shifts to point on Bush while Kerry's talking, he's always smirking or shaking his head. I'll post final thoughts when it's over.

Bush did better than I was expecting. A few slip ups, but he managed to do pretty well. I think Kerry may have won this debate however. He just managed to make stronger points than the president. Although it does bother me that he repeatedly brings up his service.

I was really hoping they could've not talked about Vietnam for 90 minutes, but alas. Overall, from professional standpoint, Kerry is a much better speaker than Bush. Bush repeatedly boggled his answers, and tended to have a "broken record" motif going on...I don't know whether that was because he didnt' know what to say, or just had nothing to say.

My hope is that people do watch this, and take a good hard look at how the candidates want to deal with the issues our country faces, rather than getting into this "he said" bullshit.....get over the bullshit, and base your vote on what strategy you think is best, and if you do that, there is no way that anyone can lambast someone for their opinion on how to solve something (so long as its not completely ridiculous) but all in all, I felt that both candidates posed their positions well, and that whatever position you are most comfortable and confident with, vote for that candidate.

I'm curious to see what the undecided think. I'm probably still not going to vote for either of them, but it seems clear at this point that even the debates aren't swinging people that are already Bush fans or Kerry fans.

Anyone else watch the Daily Show coverage of the debates? I'm sorry, but Jon Stewart totally made Giulliani look like an ass. For once, Kerry was incredibly clear and consistent about his feelings on this war, and if he continues like he did tonight then he very well may have my vote for a purpose other than just the lesser of 2 evils.

kerry is a superb debater, but woo...totally boring man. and his word choices...too much...

does joe-american really have any idea what the word 'proliferation' means?

bush is better at the plain-speaking crap that woos the simple minded. also, kerry came off as a douchebag, which couldn't have helped him. bush came off as the nicer candidate.

Bush actually used one word I had to look up in the dictionary to make sure he wasn't making it up. Turns out it was really a word, only horribly mispronounced. But then again, that's a lot of words when it comes to our president...

*Looks for Danoz's post that burns Kerry's debate. Cannot be found.*

Yo, Danoz! Where's your 1337 post that defends this debate? Funny thing is, if Kerry was the weaker debater tonight, then I promise you wouldn't hesitate to bash Kerry. Why don't you defend your boy, Bush?

LOL, I totally hear ya on that one. I know what word you are talking about. My roommates and I were all like, "did Bush just make up that word?"

Don't worry, he will. My mom and her bf, both Bush supporters, thought he thrashed Kerry tonight. I happened to miss the whole thing except for the closing part of it.

the basic thing about debates is this: whoever you're rooting for always ends up the winner, unless the other guy REALLY hands your guy his ass. however, considering how tight the debate formats usually are, there's no wriggle room for much spontaneity.

I think they both did a good job, Kerry is obviously the better speaker- so public debating isn't really Bush's domain. Still, when it comes to the presidency I want substance over presence. I was most interested in the North Korea dicussion, and I think Bush came out on top there with the better plan.

<img src=smilies/eek13.gif> Bush's plan might as well have been "let's get dem gooks." It would have had about the same efect.

It's absurd that you correlate international pressure from China and Japan with "let's get dem gooks”, especially when the alternative is trusting a leader who starves most of his people and puts the rest into prison camps. Prison camps where “offenders” are tortured for life, their whole family is tortured—and then descendants for the next three generations are tortured, tested and murdered in these concentration camps. Kim Jong is practically a deity in North Korea, and the only information given to the people is censored. Guess who they blame for every problem in their life, America. Guess who has nuclear weapons, North Korea. They force thier children to write the diaries of Ann Frank, and then they tell them, "This is what America did to this poor girl. This is what America wants to do to you"-- and that, of course, is a correct answer in North Korea.

Guess who could've left Iraq alone for a while and gone for a country who people really do think have nuclear weapons.

So sending mixed messages is right.. that we can make more nuclear weapons, yet tell N.Korea that they can't? Doesn't that seem just a tad hypocritical?

(And by the way, here's a transcript of the debate, should any of you feel like back-referencing to it: http://www.debates.org/pages/trans2004a.htmlhttp://www.debates.org/pages/trans2004a.html</a>).

Yeah, it sucks; a few people have now told me that Bush had a much better image during the debate.

I didn't watch because I prefer transcripts, and, http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/09/30/debate.transcript.1/index.html in the transcript</A>, I think Kerry beat the ever loving tar out of Bush.

Kerry: {ACCUSATION BACKED UP BY FACTS}
Bush: What does that send to our troops? Does a commander in chief say that?
