View Full Version : Good WYSIWIG HTML editor

I was wondering if anyone could point me towards a good (preferably free) WYSIWIG HTML editor (meaning a visual editor). I think it would help me a lot with a current project, and I tried using MS Publisher and realized that it blows goat chunks. Why in god's name would they have the proggie automatically re-compress images?

You can try either the trial of Dreamweaver or Frontpage Express. Don't know of any others off the top of my head.

Nevermind the recompression thing...that was a stupid mistake on my part.
I think I'll tack on another question here...

Now, I don't know anything but really basic HTML, so excuse me if this is a stupid question...but is it possible to have a graphic, then have additional text or another graphic overlaying that image? Like...if you could have a frame, and set the background to be JPG1.jpg, then have on top of that the word "w00t!" or the transparent file GIF1.gif.

Crimson Editor. It's got some nifty features and it be free. Easy to use, too.<img src=smilies/magbiggrin.gif>

Sure. Just put the lower graphic in an invisable table as a background image and place the text or another image inside the table so it appears on top.

Ah, I thought that was how it might work...I guess Publisher really DOES suck because I could find no way to do that there. <img src=smilies/laff.gif> I'm really kinda wary of MS's HTML anyway...it's bound to have some weird proprietary tag in it somewhere that chokes on FireFox.

I thank ye kindly good sir.

Although I was kinda looking for something more visual...but I guess I'll
just have to learn more HTML anyway.

Go buy yourself a copy of <u>Web Design & Development Using XHTML</u> by Jeffrey Griffin, Carlos Morales, and John Finnegan, published by Franklin, Beedle & Associates. While there are some points that the book over-emphasizes - i.e., saying that there are "more computers than you would think" still running in 8-bit collor in their talk about web-safe colors, when there hasn't been a computer incapable of at least 16-bit color made since probably 1997 or even earlier - it's still a robust book and a worthwhile addition to anyone's collection.

Another question...should I design a page for 800x600, or do more people use higher resolutions these days?

*edit*
And by the way, I found a WYSIWIG editor called cuneAform, that is not only very very W3 compliant from what I've heard, but is also a FireFox extension so it uses FireFox for display and can utilize any of FireFox's functionality (like navigating using extensions). Also, not only is it free, but so far it seems to have support for stuff I couldn't find ways to do via MS Publisher alone.

More people use higher resolutions, but 800x600 users are still at least 30% *, so you should probably make your site 800x600 friendly.

I find the browser trends on that page to be very encouraging. IE numbers steadily dropping, while Mozilla and Opera usage increasing. Mozilla usage more than doubling in this year alone.

Just good to see stuff like that <img src=smilies/magbiggrin.gif>

Whether you're a MS fan or not, there's also their WebMatrix product. It's free, supports standard HTML, and if you ever decide to mess around with any ASP.NET stuff, it supports that too.

Opera doubled over the last year, too! 2.x% is like, TWICE 1.x%!
