View Full Version : Freaky...

My friend has some freaky internet problems. For example, some sites won't even load (like Slashdot or SomethingAwful). For some reason he can't stay logged into AIM for a long time without it disconnecting him from it. What the hell is going on?

Is your friend running off LAN or modem? It could be disconnecting on and off.

Or it might be a cookie problem.

56k modem. If it were a cookie problem it wouldn't affect AIM.

Did this happen recently or has it always been like this?

Any firewall software? Might be causing him troubles.

Well, it's been doing this for a long time. I don't think he's using a firewall. If this matters at all, his BIOS battery is dead. Even after replacing his modem it still does this. It used to load fine. Then again, his comp used to boot up in 30 seconds. Now it takes about 2 minutes.

First off, with a dead battery, the bastards always take longer to boot up.
Secondly : AIM? Aol Instant Messenger?
*giggles* Tell him to try Yahoo. It could be some kind of freak thing, nothing to do with the modem. I'll tell you the same thing that I've told everyone who's computers I've worked on: AOL is a memory/resource hog. It's worse that IE. Get rid of it.

Also, it does the same thing with MSN messenger. He can't load YIM for some reason.

What about the speed? Is it connecting at fast speeds or like SLOW 14k to 9600.

It's normal speed, like 48000-52000bps.

Try to replace the BIOS battery and scan for possible viruses, worms, ad-ware and other malicious applications. My boss's PC was infected with eight viruses and over 130 worms/ad-ware/spyware/misc. malicious applications, and it prevented her from checking her e-mail and visiting certain web sites (especially sites for anti-virus and firewall programs). After she had her PC disinfected, everything went back to normal. Anyway, the reason I brought up her as an example is that she is also on dial-up.

Ten to one, you hit the nail on the head. Gotta be a worm or a virus in there. AdAware and HiJack This! ought to do it.

Actually, there is at least one virus on his comp, but it can't erase it since it's infected a system file (damn!). He really needs a reinstall of Win98SE, but his stupid comp manufacturer (SysteMax!) only included a recovery CD that reformats his hard drive. Also, how do you replace the BIOS battery?

The bios battery is round and silver. Looks like a big watch battery or a camera battery. Should be clipped in. Pull the bastard out carefully. You should be able to pick up a replacement for about three bucks.

One time I couldn't access the sites I visited most often. (ex. Glasko.com (my own site), Zophar ect.)... I called my ISP, but they claimed ignorance. When I pinged the sites, I actually hit a response... I just couldn't load them in any browser. Finally I ran serveral spyware utilities and scanned for viruses... when that didn't work I reformatted my computer. It was ugly :P

The procedure should be listed in the motherboard manual. If not, do what Flash says, but make sure you and the computer are grounded before touching the sensitive electronics.

Before you bother formatting your HD and installing Windows, burn your friend a Linux Live CD. Depending on what he uses his computer for, Linux could be a more reliable solution for his computing needs. With a Live CD, there's no risk of erasing data from your HD as everything runs from the CD. I recommend http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.htmlKnoppix</a> for your first Live CD. Besides, it's always nice to have a back up operating system in case the hard drive or Windows is seriously fucked up.
