I know they arent very advanced right now, but do you think that they will ever make a good Gamecube Emulator? I've heard people say that emulating the N64 was impossible, and about when the Gamecube came out, they have N64 emulators that are pretty good. Anyways: do you think this is the case with the Gamecube? Do you think they will have a pretty good emulator for the Gamecube by the time Nintendo puts out the next system or is it going to be too difficult?

Here's my question, why are you worrying about this now? The system is only 2 years old. Well, at the current rate of the N64 emulation, GC emulation will be sucktakular fucktastic. Maybe 10 years down the line...

The big problem with n64 emulation is that none seems to bother documenting diveres chips of the wholethings, relying everything on cheap hacks people dare to call "plug-ins".

The major problem with N64 emulation is that no one seems to bother documenting the various chips in the whole thing, relying instead on cheap hacks that people call "plug-ins".

To clarify, the N64's video hardware is not emulated in a single N64 plugin so far - currently every plugin worth speaking of simply simulates the RSP microcode. Not only does this mean that a game which has microcode will not work, but it means that it isn't truly being emulated in the first place. While some people claim that emulators such as Project 64 now have the option to emulate the RSP on a low-level, it's still a moot point in that A) RSP emulation is currently only around 95% accurate (according to the knowledgeable emulator authors I've talked to), and B) No video plugins actually properly parse the RDP packets and emulate all of the commands. One author (who shall remain anonymous) did in fact write a plugin that emulated the RDP properly, but the problem is that it was terribly slow at the time (this is a couple years ago, mind you), and due to the aforementioned incomplete accuracy of all RSP cores, there were still major polygon glitches.

So, uh, yeah.

Why dont they make a N64 emulator that will emulate it properly?

Because the RSP is almost completely undocumented.

Actually, the RSP and RDP are well-documented provided you have the right documentation.

In that case I repeat Nebetsu's question

Because none of the N64 emulator authors care about "real" emulation, they just care about pleasing the "kiddiez", and if they actually emulated the RSP properly it'd be a lot slower, then the "kiddiez" would rise up and revolt.

I personally respect anyone who takes the time to write an emulator for the enjoyment of others...I mean, it's not like anyone is paying for this software (stuff like NoCash's emulators and Magic Engine being exceptions), except for possibly the developer themselves if you want to give their freetime a monetary value, or in the case of someone buying hardware to reverse engineer it and learn about it so it CAN be emulated in the first place.

I would personally tip my hat to any of them.
