as far as I know it's an emu that was stolen from sega, is that what happened? I've seen people bitch about it, but never saw the reason why they were bitching. would someone please explain (in five sentences or less) what's up with cassini?

Well regardless of whatever is going on...I popped in my Dragon Force Japanese CD and it ran it perfectly...I'm impressed. Loading time seems to be better with the PC cdrom drive as opposed to the Saturn one. I could just be imagining things.

Despite what others say, ZD has no stance on Cassini. We offer a download because it has not been proved illegal. Sure, questions remain. But until Sega says 'no', we will stand by our neutrality. There are plenty of illegal emulators, including almost all of Xports emulators for XBOX and NeoMuLandia32 to name a few.
Everyone may not agree with ZD hosting a download, but we feel it is up to the user to decide, not us. It's not our place.

Then you should point out in the Cassini description that it is a hack of GiriGiri, just like everyone else has done with any other emulator when it's a modified and/or hacked version of another emulator - see the GameBoy Color Emulators for Windows for a good deal of prior art, so to speak.

Well, IIRC, the Saturn uses a 2x drive much like the PS1... so I would hope it loads faster on a faster PC CD-ROM drive.
I haven't tried it out yet with any of my Saturn stuff. If it has the option for higher resolution and possibly some texture filtering, I'll play the compatible and decently working stuff on my PC from now on and save my Saturn's drive some wear & tear.

Yea, I thought so...

It rocks so far from what I've seen. I hope this gets updated or someone uses the source and comes up with a fully working one. I'd like to play some of my old import games since my Saturn won't play them without the adaptor (that I can't find).

We don't take a stance of 'blatant falsehoods'.

*my 2 cents* Regarding xport's emulators, I don't believe they are illegal. They are ported from other projects, however to be correctly compiled into xbox exec, it requires the offical xbox sdk (until the open source devkit has improved), which brings legality to the table =).

Yes, the use of the Microsoft XDK makes them illegal. As soon as something like OpenXDK gets better and that gets used, they're still illegal.

There hasn't been anything new on this front in a long time. If nothing else happens soon, this thread will be removed (or at least unstickied).

What makes using the Microsoft XDK illegal?

Because Microsoft are the copyright owners for it and they HATE people making free stuff for the Xbox using their own XDK. It makes them look stupid.

I think the link to the home page is gone, or was there ever one?
I'm guessing the emulator was a one-time release, especially with the controversy around it. Leaves me with only Saturnin to go with.
