I run Win XP Pro Sp1 with 512MB of ram and 40GB hard disk on an AMD Duron 1.2GHZ. Motherboard is a VIA (god I HATE VIA) VT8233 based PC Chips M803ML (internal modem and LAN disabled).
My computer has been quite unstable with random freezes and bluescreens. I was able to gather the information below:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000007f (0x0000000d, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini071804-01.dmp.

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x1000008e (0xc0000005, 0x804ee8fa, 0xf2419a0c, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini071704-01.dmp.

They both point to hardware errors of some kind...I already tested my memory with memtest86 and it passed...it is completely unpredictable when my computer crashes. I know it's not overheating because I run vcool...and it doesn't seem to be a driver issue either. Last time it crashed I was running Qemu with the redhat image, switched to slimbrowser, click on a link, bang! blue screen. It seems it blue screens when I click on "something". A file, a link, anything. Already ran chkdsk too, I had a crosslinked file early on and I lost an entire folder!!!! (it was forte agent 2, good thing I had a backup and had no important data in there! I thought NTFS was made to avoid this kind of shit)

Im starting to hit the limits of my knowledge. I need help :( This is driving me nuts. I'm not sure when it started, but I remember flashing my DVD+/-RW from 4x SL to 8x and DL and the computer rebooted once when loading windows. So I went and got an official latest patch and put it back. But ever since the computer is giving me trouble...do you think a b0rked DVD/RW can actually fuck up a computer like this?

If the flash upgrade for the burner was corrupt, that might screw up that piece of hardware. As for screwing with your entire computer, I really don't know if that has anything to do with it. The only thing I can recommend is that you try to flash your BIOS and then run a virus scan on your hard drive. There could be a virus or spyware that is the cause of your troubles.

I already scanned the computer for viruses...before I posted this though, I was 7 patches, 2 app updates and 2 driver updates behind on Windows Update. Ever since I patched up the computer is behaving...so I'm crossing my fingers....If it does it again I'll flash the bios and see if that helps, if not then I'll get another computer....AND NO VIA MOBO!

Yes, definitely. I've had misbehaving legacy USB devices b0rk my comp. I'd try unplugging the DVD/RW and seeing if things stabilize.

I would first try booting without the drive hooked up to the PSU and MOBO. I can't see an optical drive messing your whole computer up, esp. if it's unplugged :). If you still get a problem it might be worth taking it to a good shop. At least if they break something they have to replace it. Hope it works out for ya

well... there is another thing... what sorta psu you have?

inadequate PSU's can cause a lot more trouble than anyone seems to bother noticing.

but since you haven't added anything, only done some bios flashing, i doubt it is this in this case, but add that to your store of knowledge :)

Cheers to that. I recently had to unplug a drive from my 550W PSU. Dual 2.4Ghz Xeons + 52X CD-RW + DVD + 80GB IDE + 40 GB IDE + 2x 160GB SATA RAID = city-wide brownout.
