Sounds like your computer is fucked. I've installed XP on a Pentium 120 with 64mb of memory and I never got any out of memory errors.

how much memory do you have?
if all else fails, just go with win 98 SE
can't go wrong there

He already answered the memory question.
DO NOT consider 98 as an operating system. This is AWFUL advice.

Backup your important files (music, docs, passwords, et al) to something.
UNPLUG YOUR MACHINE FROM THE NET. Insert the XP cd and reboot. Let it boot from the CD (you have to hit enter when it asks to boot from the CD). Choose a new installation, delete the current partition(s) and create a new one. Do a quick NTFS format. Use your LEGAL and LEGIT key when installing.
Post install, go to your network device properties and enable the built in firewall on the device. Then you may plug into the net and head directly to windowsupdate.microsoft.com (or skip plugging in and use the windows update security cd). SP1 should be installed first (if it isn't integrated into your install cd), then you can do the rest. Do not do ANYTHING else until that is complete.
Disable the built in firewall. Install your virus protection. Install your spyware protection.
Viola.

Not really. I have a computer sitting here that has been running ME since it's public introduction. Haven't had to reformat ONCE. It stays on almost all day. The thing is, you need to MAKE the OS stable. Once it's stable, all is gravy.

Well, duh.

if you hit windows-pause/break and it doesn't say "service pack 1" UPDATE ASAP. I think swamp gave you the right way to do it nowadays....

Despite it's reputation, Windows ME isn't as terrible as people think it is. Unless I knowingly did something that had adverse effects on the system, Windows ME ran fine for me. The only reason I migrated from Windows to Linux is because I was sick and tired of constantly patching and securing Windows, and I wasted a lot of system resources with a virus scanner, firewall, and a spyware scanner, on top of the huge risk ActiveX presents, I just had to move on to an operating system that didn't present these flaws. I'm not saying Linux is 100% secure and virus-free, but it's pretty damn close when compared to Windows.

Linux is great and all but there is one big problem with it and it is not even its fault. Its support. I am not talking about tech support. I am talking about companies. They still like to make shit on windows. Windows also comes with most computers you buy from a store or Dell or someshit. I think everyone should move to Lunux. That would kick ass.
