Nothing in particular to post as of yet, but I always think ZD needs more discussion on Super Metroid, so I'm openning the floor. I'll keep people up to date on SMILE changes as I go along. Screenshots are a must, as always. Here's one that, as the title suggests, is not a trick:

I've been adding some more support for various enemy properties (or changing the pointers, if the properties are too messed up to change directly). Quite a bit has been added on that, so I'll do a mini-IPS later, instead of a screen to show those.

I smell an evil metroid hack coming on. :)

FX1 will take too much time/effort to add in this release, so I'll stick with what I've already got (for the most part)... It won't be an "evil" hack, but I'm thinking of releasing another Arena hack tomorrow . . . What am I saying? Arena is incredibly evil.

Note: this has nothing at all to do with the above screenshot.

This is not a huge hack or anything, by any means. Just like the last arena hack, this is just a mini-hack I made when testing SMILE. The last arena took 5 minutes to play. This one takes 20 or so . . . And takes you through 7 bosses/mini-bosses.

No need to report the graphical bugs, as they are all too obvious. Ignore them and enjoy . . . And for god's sake:
1) Explore each room before leaving it (you may not get a second chance)
2) Savestate before going through the doors (you may not get a second chance)
3) I've built a "model" of the landing zone *in* the landing zone... The things there represent other things... Study it.

Heh, I would love to have the time to create a full new Super Metroid with new locations, new levels and secrets would be in another places. I fucking love that game, not matter how much I did beat it.

it's not that I don't like the color green, it's just that it looks like a poor attempt at a GIF.

it's as if you used green as your transparent color, but the image itself was antialiased so it "blended" with the green to preduce different shades of green that didn't get removed when you set the green color as transparent /wwwthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

Only did about 5 minutes of work on SMILE today, but it's a start on things to come soon . . . I'm working on implementing FX1 into the editor. For those who don't know what FX1 does (a lot), below is an example:

Coolio. I suppose water (and inherent properties) are controlled too by it, but what else? Fog (crosses fingers)?

Good stuff...I have an urge to muck around with the SM ROM now using SMILE. :)

Water, lava, acid, fog, etc....... Change in level (liquids only)... Speeds...

A few other things too... Such as the glow of your helmet's visor in a dark room (whether it's on or off)... Such as the "hot rooms" of Norfair... One thing I've done (would have loved to add this as a screeny, but wouldn't show the effect) was a Ceres with a scrolling background (similar to the way the sky scrolls).

A very short mini-hack, but one with a purpose . . . Change a room from Crateria into a new Ceres room. So, Ceres has all the rooms it had before, plus one. To make things "interesting", I've changed the escape a bit . . . Look at the name of the mini-hack and you'll see why it got its name.

Acid rain in the "new" room (looks a bit better when animated)... Escape sequence shot.

Basically, I took what I had in Ceres, added a little to it, then took things to Zebes. The mini-hack takes about half an hour to play (if you don't get puzzled). Several bosses . . . Sorry about Crocomire. From there on, graphical glitching runs rampid on some things.

Note: Crocomire's room had a level bug (ie- my clean rom wasn't really clean) that has been fixed. Anyone who tried playing last night and saw the HUGE amount of glitching after, you'll be glad to know that it's only graphical stuff now (ie- no pink doors are going to block your path... varia will be visible... etc....)

That's some pretty cool stuff right there.

And now that I've played more...god damn it you're evil
I'm currently stuck at Mother Brain because I don't have enough missles because of the damn 'ninja pirates' in the room before that. :P I'm sure there's some trick to beating them that'd make it easier, but I can't remember what that is.

Depending on what you use, charge beam is more powerful than super missiles. (Plasma + Wave + Ice)
Plasma hidden in Kraid's room, Wave in Norfair above energy refill, and Ice....well you already have that.
Now, you win.

Eh, I missed the Plasma upgrade. That should help a LOT. I don't know how I missed that...I got the Varia suit, but the plasma beam is actually hidden in the boss room? I definitely didn't expect that...but then I didn't expect the screw attack to be sitting hidden inside a wall either. :P

FX1 is included in this release. Not much else has changed, but it is nice to be able to put lava/water/fog into rooms. Also, the editor will no longer crash when openning the beta room as the first room you open.

This (and the other 2 enemies I added to SMILE today) isn't really anything "new" . . . It was in the game already, just never used. Deskjockey put these into his zmv hack long ago, but I haven't added them to SMILE until now.

http://jathys.zophar.net/images/reflect.gif

Basically, as you can tell in the shot, these things "reflect" anything you shoot at them. Yes, your missiles hurt.

*On a side note, I've also included a ZST of something "special" I did. Have fun with that one.*
