I'm just curious as to what Linux distributions my fellow ZMD'ers are running. I've used Evil Entity and Fedora Core 2 in the past, and I am currently running Mandrake 10.0. As much as I like Mandrake, I want to try a few other distributions until I can find "the one". Right now I'm downloading Debian and Slackware, and I'll see how things go from there. I have Gentoo on CD, but I can't figure out how to install it so I'm passing over that until I'm more accustomed to Linux.

How would you say Gentoo compares with desktop-oriented distros like Mandrake? I really want to give it a go, but I still can't get it to install.

The key to install Gentoo is to really know your hardware.

read the install handbook, if you actually read this you probably wont have to ask for help during the install :)

Knoppix, but only as a backup OS in the event of HD crash and to recover data when Windows can't/won't read a drive. Comes in handy if you work in IT.

I'm using Gentoo at the moment. Other than that I've used Slackware the most then slax, redhad, mandrake, suse, knoppix, damn small linux, redmond, caldera, and debian.

I had Slackware 10 on my system for about a week before I removed it. There's nothing wrong with it, I really like it a lot, it's just that the rest of my family uses the computer and I don't really feel like showing them how to log on to Linux and start X, since it would absolutely confuse the shit out of them, so I decided to reinstall Mandrake 10.
