View Full Version : Installing WinXP pro fresh

(Asking a really lame newbie question here, it's embarassing, but I want to get 100% confirmation.)
For reasons that I won't list here, I want to completely rid my computer of *any* trace of my Windows XP home, and install a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro that I just purchased. Can that be done without reformatting or damaging the contents of the disk? I have a LOT of things that I do not want to lose, period.

if you only have one hard drive, then I would say get partion magic and partition the drive into two parts so you can save all your data on one and format the other for an install of XP. Or you can just spend the night and go through all your worthless junk and burn cds of what's really important. But it may take a few cds for your porno collection ;)
after a fresh install I'd say go to windows update and download all the update shit.

Boot off the CD, run setup as normal. There'll be an option to "sort of" do a fresh install. IT'll nuke your \windows\ dir, but keep Program Files and all non-registry settings. It's probably a bit less hassle to do a wipe and proper reformat, but I haven't had any issues with it so far. :)

Yeah, I'm going to go with the wipe + fresh install of pro upgrade with 2k disc for proof.
Since I'm going to be replacing the two drives in this machine with a single 40GB...
(my parents are going to pay to replace the parts I'm taking out of this setup, and in exchange, it's theirs, which really comes out to a case [I told them to throw this junker away, they agreed], a new harddrive, a monitor, and a keyboard + mouse combo, and I'll put a GeForce3 that I have sitting around in it.)
...I'll use that drive for temporary backup, along with the spare 20GB on my second drive, so I can wipe the 120GB with confidence. I'm going to go through and make a checklist of things to backup tonight, along with things I'm going to have to reinstall.
For some reason, I actually like this system accounting stuff. Getting JUST the stuff I need, and wiping everything else. I like to install programs from scratch, with a totally fresh system. It fits the new computer I'll be building. <img src=smilies/magbiggrin.gif>

Yeah, there's something kinda nice about reinstalling everything, even if it does take forever. If you have any problems with the case, feel free to PM me, since the only real difference in what you're putting together from what I just built is the motherboard. :)

I'll just reply to this thread instead. :P
I do have a question about cable length, since I'm going to buy some round cables to go inside of the case. Would a pair of 18" IDE round cables work for the two CD/DVD-ROM drives + two HDs, or would it be stretching it way too tight?
And you said that the wiring is semi-difficult...please explain.

Yup - I got a pair of 18" rounded cables. It's a bit weird doing the bending in the 3.5" drive bays, but I also put both drives in very close together.

Well, not so much difficult as cumbersome. There are a LOT of power connectors inside and it's sort of a pain to keep 'em all straight. :)

Err, presumably some devices might deviate from the norm, so it's best to just plug the IDE cable in such that the red stripe is on the same side as the little "1" marker on the board itself.

That and the fact that pretty much any cable and/or drive produced in the last 5+ years or so is "keyed" so it only properly fits in one direction. Sure you could probably force it in the other way, but if you have to force it in, that should likely tell you something.
