Ok, according to the news, they're not certain yet, since it just happened, but the Fire Department called it "suspicious".

I hadn't heard anything about it (so I'm guessing it just happened a while ago) and I'm not familiar with the area . . . It's not the one near the trade centers, is it?

No, it was an old wooden synagogue in Far Rockaway, in the Borough* of Queens.

For those who don't know, New York City is divided into five "Boroughs": Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island.

Same thing around here. the homeless people will drag trash into a pile and set fire to it for warmth in the night and sometimes the abandon building they're in will go up.

It could also have been something else: I heard that some real estate developer company is planning on building in that area.
