Does anyone know how I could swap the music from one SNES game to another? I don't need a compleat run through, just the basics of how to do it.

Figure out how the music data is stored in one game
Figure out how the music data is stored in the other game

Open up a hex editor and re-compose the music in the 2nd game to match the notes in the first game. You might also need to change instrument samples, which I couldn't tell you how to do.

It's NOT as simple as just dropping an SPC from one game into another. It's a very complex proecess, which is why it's rarely ever done.

Rarely? Never heard of a hack where that was actually done... mind giving an example, for curiosity's sake?

Bouche on acmlm's boards put some SMAS music in SMW if I'm not mistaken. He's really into SPC hacking and stuff.

If I had one I'd give it to you. I just heard rumors about it.. never played it. I don't doubt the rumors though.... Bouche is savvy when it comes to VG music.

Actually, there is one example where it is a fairly straight-forward process. The format used in Final Fantasy VI is compatible with the format used in Chrono Trigger (but not vice-versa).

Wow, that is exactly what I am looking for (I'm doing a Chrono Trigger hack). How did you do it? Was it just swapping out the SPCs?

Swapped in Wild West, changed a pointer, and completely remixed the instruments. The instruments took the longest to do (several hours). However, this particular example does not require knowing the SPC format for Chrono Trigger.

Course, if you want any other song than stuff from Final Fantasy VI, this example is not very helpful.

Wow, that's really awesome.
Of course, it makes sense.. Minoru Akao was the sound programmer for both games. Other games he's done include (but aren't limited to - thanks, mobygames.com for the info)

Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy IV

Also, another interesting tidbit - very many of Akao's sound "drivers" for PSX/PS2 games are mostly compatible with each other. For example, Front Mission 4 music wil play using the Final Fantasy X-2 code (not perfectly, but almost.)<img src=smilies/cwm11.gif>

Ahem. Try Sliver-X's hacks for Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy. Even though he'd probably never admit it, but damn, best damned hacks I've played. (Well, really enjoyed.)
