what do you think is the best quality/size tradeoff for the LAME mp3 output plugin for winamp?

I generally encode 196 kbit Stereo (not Joint Stereo, Stereo...I don't think it makes enough difference size wise in many cases to risk possible drops in quality with JS).

First of all, don't use the winamp plug-in, use EAC or CDex. I use VBR-NEW from 64 to 320 kbits, High quality, Joint-Stereo, with, of course, the LAME encoder.

Where did you find this plug-in ? Might come in handy for videogames music formats :)

from winamp.com (just go to plugins and type in lame in the search box), and that's EXACTLY why I'm using it :)

"--alt-preset standard" is scientifomagically engineered to be completely transparent to 99% percent of listeners while maintaining a relatively small filesize.

note that in newer LAME releases, that preset is now typed as "--preset standard"

Use EAC *Exact Audio Copy* and use the LAME codec for best results. I just recently ripped some scratched to hell CD's that were over 15 years old and this combo worked great and I found that encoding at 192kbps using ABR *advance bit rate* encoding gave superb results and NO problems at all during playback, they all sounded just like new. <img src=smilies/magbiggrin.gif>

I got my own place but I can't afford cable or internet at the moment so I have to go online via friends and relative like at this moment but I am around about once a week or so till this situation changes. <img src=smilies/magbiggrin.gif>

Know how that is. I got cheap net acess myself. It's slow and Dial-up, but the price is right? <img src=smilies/thumb.gif>

and what settngs would that be on the plugin I'm using?
