I was sitting here playing FFXI, with my parents laptop sitting on my desk next to me (which I was using to learn Microsoft Office shit) and the thing just powered down, as though someone'd pulled the plug. I tried turning it back on, and it would power on for a second, then die again. So I plugged it into the wall, and with the help of that, I was able to get the thing running.

So...now with my ear up to the side, I could hear it making noises straight out of some creepy horror movie. The HD sounded like it'd seek for a second then try again over, and over, and the CD-ROM was completely non-responsitive, and I was greeted with a "Non-System disk or disk error" message, indicating the worst - the HD is fucked.

Oh shit.

Why couldn't this shit have happened while someone else was using it?

So I'm thinking something got fucked up in the already lame power supply, and fried the shit out of my drives. The thing POSTs okay, but the DVDROM won't eject, and the HD is nuked.

I just hope they don't pin this shit on me, or things could get ugly. This might be a fight that could get me kicked out of the house, even, because there's no convincing the technologically illiterate that it's not my fault that the hardware failed.

My 486DX 100 laptop pulled the same shit on me. The battery and the CMOS battery took a dump at the same time. I pulled the battery out and it's working again.

That's happened to me in this household SO many times. Then there's the times when I've tried to tell somebody what they did wrong with something and they refuse to listen....

Keep in mind that my mother is one of the most computer illiterate people I know.

Me: "Well, the Windows all went down into the little grey part there (see the buttons?) because you hit that button on the side of the mouse. It's configured to make all the windows 'go small'."

Mom: "What, no, I didn't do that."

Me: *thinks* "Well, that's the only possible explanation that would even remotely make sense, so you HAD to have done that." <img src=smilies/upeyes.gif>

My mom and her boyfriend a very techno-illiterate which works to my advantage. Let's say I fuck something up with an OS install and the computer's down. I tell them there was a power surge when they were at work and it wiped the hard drive. It works all the time.

haw!

i just tell my mom that if she wants her comp back up she can either do it herself or shut up and let me do it. usually she looks at me for a sec, then walks away. usually her comp doesn't go down, but its usually mine so i usually dont have to say anything.
