Alright, so ZoneAlarm lately has been really fucking up my internet connection, making it unstable. Also, programs that use the internet will lock up and cause all other programs with an active internet connection to lock up and then crashing my system. That really pissed me off. So now I uninstalled ZA after several months of service and everything is fine now. But I still need protection. What FREE firewall program would anyone recommend?

Sygate Personal Firewall, when I used Windows, it was the most important and most functional security app I installed. SPF also worked well with my second firewall, the Linksys BEFSR11 router, which pretty much gave me complete security from inbound attacks.

If you have a router you really don't need much else in my opinion, if not I guess someone else will give you some info.

if youre ok with beta software you can download RC2 of windows xp service pack 2, which has a better firewall than before on it.

The 3 best free one's I've used are Zone Alarm *but this is out*, Sygate, and Tiny Personal Firewall. <img src=smilies/cwm11.gif>

As others have mentioned, I currently use Sygate's Personal Firewall in conjunction with my router's built-in one. Zone Alarm one day decided to eat itself and screw shit up all over the place. A couple of months later, it did the same thing to a friend of mine's PC. Needless to say, I won't be touching ZA again in the near future, if ever.

Alright, I guess I'll get Sygate. A friend of mine used to use that a long time ago, so I guess I'll get to downloading that. I KNEW I forgot something. Oh, and I want software, not hardware, so no routers or anything. (That would also probably require me to get a new DSL modem).

I had a similar experience with ZA. I used it religiously until one day it just started eating RAM like there was no tomorrow. Slow overall PC performance and damn slow internet connection. SPF is the best.

You'd be surprised. I was able to use a router with my crap-tastic DSL modem.
