I made a few errors in my original post, so here it goes:

For sale today I have an 80GB hard drive, and an internal 8X DVD burner.

The hard drive is a Western Digital Caviar drive with a capacity of 80GB and uses the IDE Ultra ATA100 interface and a rotational speed of 7200RPM. It also sports a 2MB buffer and an average seek time of 8.2ms. It's an OEM drive and does not come with power or IDE cables. Price is $70.

Next we have an internal NEC DVD+-/RW. It's the ND2500a model and it features a black faceplate. The ND2500a operates at read speeds of 40X CD-ROM and 12X DVD-ROM, and writes at 8X DVD+R, 4X DVD+RW, 8X DVD-R, 4X DVD-RW, 32X CD-R, and 16X CD-RW. The drive uses the ATAPI/IDE interface and features a 2MB buffer. This is also an OEM drive and does not include power, IDE or audio cables, nor does it come with software. $75 plus shipping and it's your's.

While I personally do not provide a guarantee, warranty or repair service, I purchased these items from NewEgg around June 7, 2004, and are covered by manufacturer warranties (1 year for the DVD+-/RW, and 1 year for the HDD). However, I tested these devices in my computer and both were detected and powered on. I am selling both because I really don't need them, and my motherboard cannot correctly detect 80GB drives (it was detected as 65GB on the BIOS screen).

Shipping for each item is $10, $15 if you purchase both. I accept PayPal, money orders (USPS and Western Union), and cashier's checks, but I do not accept e-checks or personal checks. If you're interested, please send a private message or e-mail bipolarNOSPAMbastard{at}NOSPAMtribalectic{dot}{com }

Thanks for looking,
blackize

Are you sure that you have the jumpers set right on the hard drive? I know my parents maxtor had some strange jumper settings for certain computer config situations instead of the usual master/slave/cable select.

I didn't even bother to check. As it is now, the drive's in an anti-static bag, in a box, in my basement.

I just tried changing the jumper and BIOS settings, and it's still detected as 65535 MB. After paritioning and formatting the drive using a data recovery CD for a Windows installation, it was only paritioned/formatted as a 10.4 GB drive. This computer really is a piece of shit and it looks like there's no upgrading it.

As it stands, both the hard drive and DVD+-/RW are still for sale. Here's a nice deal, both the HDD and DVD+-/RW for $125 plus shipping (Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation). I'll also throw in two blank CD-R discs and that data recovery CD I mentioned earlier for an extra $3.

Have you checked for a BIOS update for your computer?

I've tried flashing the BIOS before, except it always fails before the upgrade completes. I've loaded the flash program off the HDD, from a floppy and a bootable CD, and nothing worked. Besides now that I'm running Linux and I don't have a CD burner or extra floppies, I won't be able to do it. Once I save up enough to build my own system, I'm going to turn this one into a firewall.

Gee I had the same problem with my 160gb drive but when I updated my bios and got Win XP the detected size went from 137gb to 160gb. Just thought you'ld like to know this since most boards made more than 3 years ago will not detect a large drive right with reflashing the bios with an upgraded one.

But I can't flash the BIOS to begin with, no matter where I load the update utility from, it always hangs.

Then in the old bios look for an option virus protection, boot protection, bios write protection. Something like that is on a lot of computers to stop viruses from infection your bios but will also stop legit flashing of the bios also. Take a look, it'll only take a second and I imagine if your motherboard is over a year old it'll also fix a few problems or give you better performance even if you do sell that drive. Good luck.
