View Full Version : Problem: Game Speeds Up on Start

I just downloaded the VBA, and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, with the hopes of recording the sound the compass makes when you enter a room that has a key in it for use as my text message notification. "Either I have a text message, or there's a key hidden in this room o.O".

In anycase, when I start up the game, for a half-second, the game plays at normal speed, but then fast-forwards at an incredible rate. I can't play the game at all.

I've checked all the options for frame-rates, and none of the keys on my keyboard are being held down, so I can't explain the problem, and therefore can't fix it. Has anyone else had and solved this problem, or know what's wrong? I browsed the FAQs and couldn't see anyone else expiriencing this phenominon.

Are you using the newest version of VBA-M that was just released a few weeks ago? What operating system are you using?

1) VisualBoyAdvance version 1.7.2.
per the README
2) Windows 7

Try switching to VBA-M (http://vba-m.com/) and see if that fixes your problem. It's a branch of VBA that's still be updated regularly.

I have that file, but it's a 7Z and I don't know what to do with it

If I check the "use the web to find out what kind of programs will open this file" I'm told it's a compressed file, but I don't seem to be able to extract it.

OK, I got a trial version of WinZip that can extract 7Z files, extracted the file you linked to me, and the opening scene is running at the proper speed. I haven't started playing yet, but the problem seems to be fixed. Thanks a lot!

If it helps, upon starting a new game (by pressing enter), I'm taken to the default screen with three character spaces, and when I select one to name, and press the right arrow once, it skips ahead several letters. The input is being speed up quit a bit, and, like I said, I've looked at the settings, but I don't see anything wrong.

7zip is a newer compression format but it's completely free and also generally makes smaller files than .rar (and much smaller than .zip.) You can get the official client at 7-zip (http://www.7-zip.org). Personally, I use WinRAR just because I'm comfortable with the interface and the free trial isn't time limited.

Just to be clear, have you tried running other GBA games, just to make sure there's not something bizarre happening with your Zelda ROM?

You might try asking for help on the VBA-M forum (http://vba-m.com/forum/index.php), as there are likely more knowledgeable people there. I don't have Windows 7 but I assume VBA-M *should* work just fine on it.

I can confirm that VBA-M works fantastically on Win7. However, I completely dislike the new build and have stuck with build #956.
