got home after a wonderful mother's day with my grandmother, and when i look at my computer, i see three IMs waiting for me in the system tray.

i click them in order.

the first was from a friend i had talked to during the day. i told her i was leaving, and she must have IMed her goodbye just as i tossed my away message up.

the second was from my old college buddy. he wanted me to go to this club in manhattan with my girlfriend. he wanted to introduce me to his new lady.

the third had a simple message. it said "hey sexy"

unfortunately, it was from my ex-girlfriend.

the greeting threw me, well, because you don't call your ex sexy. especially when said ex has a boyfriend of her own. i was curious, so i asked her what was up.

what followed was a mushy conversation, where she talked about how she fell out of love with her man, and kept wondering how i was doing with mine own significant other. the last part was what she was really interested in. she kept asking how things were going, and if we were going to stay together.

needless-to-say, it didn't take the amazing kreskin to see through her ruse. she was sweet talking me, flirting with me, and pretty much throwing herself at me, which really fucking surprised me, because when we dated, i had acted (and i'm still quite sorry about it) like a complete dick, manipulating her into dumping me, when it was ME who wanted out in the first place.

anyway, i get the story about how her boyfriend went from strong and tough to gentle pussycat, and how this always seemed to happen after two years, we talked about out short time together (just 8 mos.), and apparently i'm the only guy she never broke. in fact, quite the opposite...i broke her.

well, my actual girlfriend calls in the middle of this strange IM, and i tell her the story. she's sort of the jealous type, so i had to preface it by telling her not to go crazy over this. she agreed, but still got a little pissed off (i can understand, even tho' i'm hardly jealous myself).

i dunno...i'm kinda bothered by this. why did my old flame bother me like that? i seriously don't get it. when we broke up, i told her under no circumstance would there ever be a second chance after parting, and at the time, she seemed to agree. i told her point blank that my girl and i were not breaking up in the foreseeable future, but she was still ultra flirtatious. i'm someone that respects when people are dating someone else, you don't overtly try to pick them up. this seemed so out of character for my ex, and it pretty much jeopardizes any future friendship. why would she even bother? i'm hoping she was drunk or something, because there can be no other rationalization for this.

Hm.

From what I've observed, when a girl breaks up with someone, the first thing she looks for is to go back to someone familiar.

I guess you were on that list... maybe you weren't the first one. :)

Best thing to do in a case like that is to tell her off, and convince her that rebounds are bad, and that it might do her some good to get some friends of her own gender and enjoy being single for a while before 'breaking' her next 'victim' :)

Of course, since she was the one who contacted you, it would be nuts if your girlfriend flew off the handle. It's not your fault, after all.

Join the club! My ex was like that, except while she was still with her bf. Considering you got her to dump you, she's probably thinking that your "dumped ass" would be eager to get back with her at her whim. That's probably entirely what it boils down to, especially if she doesn't realize you manipulated her into dumping you.

Analysis: She's a whorebag. I've had boyfriends like that where after a breakup they'll try to pick me up on their rebound. I've found it's just best to tell them to fuck off and block most electronic means of communication (i.e., IM programs and email, never phone-block someone).

You can't rationalize a few things women do. When they're acting upon emotion, it's damned near impossible.
It sounds like she wants a 'reminder' of a time when she was concievably happier - she might actually miss the fact she couldn't 'break' you. I went through this same thing about 25 years ago with a woman I'd been seeing 2 years earlier.
Cept I got back together with her.
It was hell. But that's me.
My advice is be careful.
Good luck.
