They did you a favor. Girls that go along to those kinds of things are either weak-minded sheep or "not long-term material." If you're looking for a quick lay, I guess it's not a problem, but you don't strike me as that kind of guy.

I got really disillusioned with the party scene very early on. I love to go out and have fun or socialize with people, but the parties I went to were usually just about alcohol, drugs, and sex. There are parties that aren't like that, but they're few and far between.

I've been in your situation many times. You're sitting there, enjoying a conversation with someone or just chilling and playing video games, cards, etc., when somebody suggests you all go to a frat party. Needless to say, everyone says yes (OMG, can't look lame). If you don't agree to go, you're stuck by yourself for the night (after several rounds of guilt from your friends). If you do, then you're stuck at some party with masses of drunk morons staggering around and pretending to dance, while the music plays so loud that the only words you can make out are "cool" and "hit."

Fuck that. A single conversation with an intelligent person is a thousand times more stimulating than those parties. Find those people and hang out with them. They'll know where you're coming from.

You greatly misunderstand ravers. Saying you hate ravers is about as specific as saying you hate emulation fans. There are so many different kinds of ravers that it's impossible to accurately generalize.

I've been "in the scene" for quite a while now, since I was 16 or so. I've not been as active lately, but I can tell you that they attact the oddest crowds. Sure, you get the druggies and the candy kids (those are the sort of subgenre of ravers that enjoy glowsticks/pacifiers), but you also get the electronic music fans, junglists, clubbers, partiers, and so on. Overall, they attract a much more varied group than either clubs or frat parties.

There are many people capable of rather high-level thought. I've gotten into some very interesting discussions with people, both on and off of drugs.

Every scene is different. Every party is different. The atmosphere of a nice small rave with a good vibe and good DJing is indescribable. It's almost as coherent a group as a church, and there are many parallels between the two.

That said, glowsticks are incredibly fun to dance with, if you have a bit of skill.

Really, really depends on the drug. There are some that I agree with you wholeheartedly about (pot, heroin/opium, coke/crack, speed if addicted). There are others that I disagree strongly with your claim about. Acid has given me a lot of power over my own mind. It showed me all the hidden assumptions I made about reality. Ecstasy's given me insight into other people and how I perceive them.

What are these "drug-related problems"? "Ecstasy overdose"? I put that in quotes because the cause of death isn't actually ecstasy overdose. It's dehydration, serotonin syndrome, hyperthermia, hyponatremia, or some combination of these. The toxicity of ecstasy is much higher. The effective dose to lethal dose ratio was somewhere above 50 (at least in lab animals). Heroin overdoses are usually a result of the variability of quality of heroin on the street. A junkie gets something much purer than usual, and pow, he's dead.

There are very few actual, credible scientific studies judging the long-term impact of drug-use. You may also know people who smoked their entire life and died of natural causes. Despite that, we have scientific studies that show smokers are more likely to get cancer. Anecdotal evidence can be useful, but it's often invalid.

I don't mean to try to push drug use on anyone. I'm just backing up my side of it all.

In the long run its more him being a dumb asshole than anything else. Being a dumb asshole, he makes two dumb asshole decisions (ie drinking more than necessary, and driving after drinking more than necessary), which gets his dumb ass killed. Its just like when dumb assholes die from diet and energy pills containing ephedra. They either don't drink enough water (they probably didn't before they took the pill anyway, further reinforcing the fact that they are dumb assholes) or overexert themselves or some other thoroughly dumb assed thing to do. Therefore, ultimately stupidity is at the heart of it all. This is why I think we should stop taking measures to protect and ease the existence of dumb assholes. They should be allowed to off themselves more often, thus ridding us, an overpopulated world, and the gene pool of dumb assholes.

I've had the good fortune to end up at parties that aren't just big piss-ups, and usually had good conversations with people. Being fairly energetic and loud-mouthed, I can have obnoxious fun with people without having to drink or snything to do it. At the one large "booze party" I've ended up at, I ran into another person who was strictly a social drinker, and had a good visit with them. We ended up holding down a guy on the sofa because he was too plowed to be allowed to go, and everybody else took off (the bastards) when he started stumbling around and trying to leave.

This sounded like to me that you were trying to clear ecstasy of all blame...."it wasn't the drug that killed him, it was the dehydration"...something like that. With your drunk driver analogy, it reads to me like you're putting the blame on the phone pole for killing a drunk driver (cause that's what technically killed him) instead of him being a stupid fucker and driving under the influence.

Maybe what you were trying to say is that the drug itself won't cause death if the person using it isn't a fuck up? If that's what you were saying, I agree with you somewhat. Live and let live, right?

The gist of what I was saying is that the dead drunk driver died because of all the factors involved. He drank, he knew drunk driving was stupid, and did it anyhow. What's more, the alcohol impaired his judgement so he didn't think what he was doing was as bad as it actually was. Instead of relying on his knowledge that drunk driving was bad, he made the decision to drive anyhow. Through bad luck or stupidity, he hit a phone pole and died.

This is almost precisely like E use. It'll let you dance for longer than you'd be able to without it. It will dehydrate you. It's an altered state of consciousness (although more subtle than alcohol) that will affect judgement.

So, if you're going to use drugs, know what their dangers are, and know how to properly maintain yourself. The cause of death was dehydration. The path that led to that dehydration was E use. The E isn't responsible for the death; it was the choices made by that individual. To use another analogy: Guns don't kill people, people kill people. With E use, there's much less possibility for an errant "gun" to kill someone, although I suppose there may be some example where it could happen. It's not without risk, although it can be nearly without risk if you do a lot of reading beforehand.

So you see how much quicker it was to write the phone pole analogy? <img src=smilies/laff.gif>

I can't stand the people who do drugs and become utter idiots. There are a lot of ravers that I personally have problems with. Many of them have been friends of friends. I can agree with a lot of the anti-raver sentiment here, but not all of us are that bad.
