As some of you have noticed in my thread in Tech Talk (http://www.zophar.net/wwwthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=techtalk&Number=222858&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&part=), you know my machine has undergone some drastic upgrades. Last night it didn't stop there.
Old OS: Win98SE
Old C drive: 3GB (5400 RPM's)
New OS: Win2K
New C drive: 7.5GB (7200 RPM's, only way to go)

It only took two hours for my damn system to like everything. I moved a couple things around. Cable lengths were tested, and jumpers had to be switched. Anyway, on to the OS.
Attempt 1: Copy the CD to the C:, run it. No luck, reformat HD.
Attempt 2: Run it from the CD. Still no luck.
Attempt 3: Reinstall 98, then try the "Upgrade to 2K." Still, it did not install. Reformat HD.
Attempt 4: Copy CD to HD, it installed! Now that 2K successfully installed, it was a matter of getting the drivers set up. Easy part.

Feeling rest assured, my friend leaves and takes his 2K CD with him. Now it's a matter of getting the rest of the drivers, and start on the core OS updates. Aganist my will, I load up IE and go to windows update (evil microsoft!). I scan for updates, 30 megs worth. That's not too bad. I remove some that are crap (IE service pack, Outlook, etc.) IE tells me that one particular update, "Microsoft update for End Users must install seperately." At first, I felt uneasy about that one, because I wasn't sure if it was 2K needed or not. I grab it anyway.... Halfway through the download, it starts installing, normally. During installation, "failed to install at" some offset. I figure, "oh shit, this can't be good." But, I didn't reboot right away. I decided to get the other updates first. So I tried deselecting that update.

This time, however, I clicked on "install" it did nothing. Not a damn thing. At the time I was IRC, I say "brb." I reboot. 2K loads, doesn't get through the loading, then reboots. Lather, rinse, repeat. This was at midnight last night. (3-25-04) Immediately I knew, I fucked over Windows 2K. It took my an hour after my friend and I spent 4 hours just to get it working.

So, in an attempt to recover from this disaster, I try various things. "Use last known working configuration." No go. So, I fucked over the OS, and can't get to a DOS prompt. It was at about 7 pm tonight that I get 98 back up and running. Tomorrow 2K will be back on this machine. Tomorrow or the next night anyway. In the meantime, I grab all the drivers I still need.

Solution: eat a bowl of dicks.

No seriously, save $200 and get another motherboard and processor. Seriously...windows 2000 needs a bit more than a 200mhz processor and 64MB ram. 300mhz pentium 2 is minimum requirements.

Stick with windows9X for that machine and if you want to run a server then either install apache for win9x from www.apache.org which will install for you or download yourself a copy of linux.

I've ran Win2K on a 166mhz Pentium laptop with 64mb ram, and it ran fine. A 200mhz PPro should be enough, it's roughly equal in performance to a 233mhz Pentium II, especially in 32-bit apps like Win2k. More ram for the system would be good though.

*insert shreaking tire sound here*

I've installed Win2K on a 200. I've actually ran it for years that way. It never had a problem. It was slightly slow, but it ran perfectly fine. And I read on Microshit's site somewhere, you technically only need a 233, so what did I do? I OC'd the CPU to 266.

Really? It requires a 233MHz? Sheesh, here I was lead to believe it needed a 133MHz.

In any event, 2K back up and running. No more BS. I think the service pack my buddy gave me might actually what killed the OS before. We'll see what happens.

To run EFFECTIVELY (note the all caps) 2k needs at least a Pentium II 266mhz...anyone that says different is kidding themselves. Good luck with the new install...need more StarCraft... you = play, me = play, we = murder ppl

"Computer/Processor 133 MHz or higher Pentium-compatible CPU.

Memory At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM; more memory generally improves responsiveness.

Hard Disk 2 GB with 650 MB free space.

CPU Support Windows 2000 Professional supports single and dual CPU systems.

Drive CD-ROM or DVD drive.

Display VGA or higher resolution monitor.

Keyboard Required"

Those system requirements for Windows 2000 pro are straight off of Microsoft's website. Although they do have a history of understating what is minimal, especially when it comes to memory, a 200mhz Pentium Pro will be fine. I've ran Win2k on a 150mhz laptop, and it ran great. .

They do minimum requirements with no other software installed I bet since the requirement for all the win9x systems would let them run but only at a crawl and they still had a tendency to crash. I only got real performance out of win9x when I installed 256MB of ram and after that it almost never frozeup or crashed.

I find it's the available memory moreso than processor speed that's the bigger factor for determining performance. I've had windows 98 run on a 486 dx2/66 run faster than on a pentium 100, the 486 machine had 64 megs of ram and the pentium machine had 16. There was a very noticeable difference in overall speed on the system with more memory.

I believe that's because win98 minimum ram is supposed to be 32 MB and recommended is 64MB. Pretty impressive you getting it to run with 16MB at all.
