View Full Version : Thinking of getting away from my job...

I've been working at the store for 2.5 years... $5.85 / hour is the rate and it sucks. It's a lot of standing up, a lot of BS, a lot of aggrivation. I'm pretty good at not caring about customer complaints directed towards me, though. <img src=smilies/magbiggrin.gif>

Well, today the store's assistant manager announced departure later in the month... This opens the way for more pains in the ass for me as well as everyone else. Mainly me, because this would involve more physical labor (i.e. unloading the truck the store stock comes in).

I am not cut out to be doing that kind of work each week. Once every 2 months, fine, but not each week. The only reason why I'm next in line for this is because I'm the only male and... that's it. It wasn't anywhere in the job description that I was to do this.

So, here's the dilemma: Do I just get out of the job I really dislike and just try to find new work while unemployed or do I stay while continuing my search for new work due to the very small, but existing paycheck that comes my way?

I graduated from college back in August.

What would you do?

Everyone I know tries doing the 1st choice, with 100% failure at it, wind up getting a worse job and/or no job for a while. Stay in your job while looking in case you wind up finding that there is jack shit in your area and it's harder than you thought.

I myself have a skewed view on how hard it is to get a job. I've now had 2 jobs (1 still currently of course), and I've only sent resumes to 3 places and only gone to 1 interview. Other people don't have it that easy I know, but maybe it really is that easy and people just put obstacles in their way.

If I were you, I'd look up any computer related jobs in your area and apply to them, and I don't mean fill out an application and do nothing else. Fill out an application, give them your resume and/or fax it in, call back periodically to see if the job is still available and if they've reviewed your resume and application, and keep on it. If it sounds like you're not gonna get the job, abandon the pursuit of it to free up more time for applying/following up. This is what my brother does and, despite being fired from probably upwards of 20 jobs in his life, not to mention quitting some, he can still get jobs nearly at whim.

If you're going to be doing assistant manager work, you should be getting assistant management wages. Ask for the position.
