Octocrook

Well, I guess I've found a new hobby...collecting domain names. It all started when I tried to get my Crooky.com back. When I eventually decided to get Crooky.us, I also decided to get Octo.ws in the case I would ever want a name with that common short nickname I use.
Later on, having just those 2 domains just didn't seem satisfying. I was already taking a liking to looking up domains to see what was left, but there came a time when I just had to get something more. So I started on the trek to find something good and yet untaken. IMO I think I found a pretty decent one out of that search: Supur.com. Yea it's a misspelling, but it's one that if a website used it and advertised it a lot, the misspelling would make it more unique in my opinion.
But then I was like "what about the short ones?" I then began on ANOTHER trek, this time to get a decent 3-character domain. I still can't believe I got the one I got: 4u2.biz. I'm shocked mainly because it was taken in so many other extensions, including a lot of the really expensive country code TLDs.
Then, my dad told me about a blooming idea of his about a Mexico/US import/export business (was more specific but it would take a long time to go into). So in search of names that would work for that, I decided to get a couple. I got x-i.biz (x-i being short for export-import) and Mexie.com (short for Mexico Import Export).
Then, a week or so later, I came across a site that would search not only the main 6 TLDs (7 if you include .ws), but a slew of country code TLDs as well. I was finding that certain domains, which sell pretty damn well in .com were still available in other ccTLDs. The biggest consideration I was having was Men.cd. Granted, the marketing for that would be tremendously than the recently sold $1+ million Men.com, as Men.cd at least to me indicates selling gay porn cds. But alas, I learned that .cd domains come at a price, much like most of the good .tv ones, as both extensions are owned by the same dickweeded company.
My ccTLD trek was continuing on though, as was my overall search for must-have domains, as I found sites on which you can check out what domains are on hold or deleted. You might think "well, who would let any of the really good ones go?" I would have thought the same thing. Currently, nbc.net is on hold...it's been on hold for a week now, meaning that the registration has expired and the domain register is giving a grace period to allow the owner to renew. Sadly, you can't backorder domains on hold, so I'm sure someone who backordered before it was on hold would be getting it when it's deleted, if it's deleted. Still, pretty exciting thing to see...now I visit that deleted domains site every day.
But...my 5th and latest aqcuisition came tonight after about 3 days of thinking it over after finding it on a domain search program. Trying to think of heavy-hitter names that have sold well or can sell well, the obvious notorious sale of Business.com on ebay a couple years back came to mind. So I run business through...not a thing. Well, every time I run a noun, I run its plural, so in this case, it's businesses. I got a few choices back, figuring at first (well, that might not be worth so much), but one of them stuck out at me: Businesses.nu (essentially in English, Businesses.new).
I come to find out that the .nu extension is actually pretty popular. Even my 4u2 domain name was taken in .nu, and most of the time, when I ran through names in this program, .nu was not available. Nu in Swedish means "now", so that's part of it, but I think that nu sounding like new is a big deal of the popularity surrounding it. So I was rather surprised to see this name, Businesses.nu, still available. I mean it screams to me "website for new businesses". So I got it...I guess I'm officially a total geek now, lol. $35/yr for 2 years on that one...rather expensive, but I'm going to hold onto it for a while, maybe even make just a little self-marketing page on it and eventually auction it off on eBay (on our 3800+ feedback name).
So yea...I'm becoming a domain name nut. I figure at the very least, I can sell em for about what I got em for if worst comes to worst, and I haven't really had a hobby in a while anyways.
