Yes I have.

Just got back on Tuesday after being in New Zealand, and then Singapore, for a total of around 7 weeks. New Zealand is a marvellous, marvellous country. Singapore less so, but it's still worth seeing if you're in the neighbourhood. My Dad and brother (who moved out there in May last year) have just been given permanent leave to remain in the country, and so it follows from that that I will now be able to go out there myself to live, without the whole totruous immigration process to hinder me. And I can't say it's not tempting, but I'm one of those rare breeds who are actually happy where they are, so it's a real dilemma. I'll keep you posted (get it? posted? I slay me) at any rate.

But that's off-topic. The point of this was just to announce my grand return, if anyone cares. In fact, the more astute members might have spotted that I actually did lurk on the boards even whilst I was away, but I know I'd have gotten addicted to posting if I started, so I didn't.

But that was then. I'm now back, so look forward to hearing more from me.

My cousins live there. I'm conflicted about Singapore - I really love the shopping, but I really detest the place. Whoever decided to build that place needs to learn that there's something to be said for imperfection. Maybe it's just the city girl in me, but after a few days there I'm hankering for a dirty road, an overcrowded train, some random illegal activity, a nightclub maybe - anything to make me feel like I really am in a city with a lot of people in it. But I get nothing. Singapore is so perfect, it's boring.

Haha, that's strange, because that's not what I found at all. What grated about Singapore for me wasn't the perfection, but the dishonesty in that perfection. You really only had to walk a little on from the Central Business District, etc, and you ended up in some real slums. The area my hotel was in - Geylang - was pretty shady, as was most of the suburbs (seems that this is a reversal from most cities). For a country that has such an obviously high public spending record (Singapore's MRT is really something, isn't it?), I'd prefer to see far more socio-economic redistribution.

By the way, where did you go shopping? Suntec City Mall (the one with the Fountain of Wealth) was pretty good, as was Bugis Junction.

My point of view probably has something to do with the fact that every time I go there, I stay with my little cousins and my very conservative, super-rich uncle. I'm surprised there even is a Singapore that isn't clean and boring, but I was probably purposefully sheltered.

Orchard Road rocks. Tanglin has some gorgeous antiques and old books, and I could spend days among the clothes in the Palais Renaissance. Although when it comes to actually selecting a wardrobe, Bangkok is a lot cheaper and more interesting.

Thank god you're back. There's been mass chaos since you've been gone.
