View Full Version : Let's talk about job ethics...

Given my current "situation", I was forced to take a peon job. A friend of mine works in the field and I usually chill with him while he works...seems like a nice field.
So far EVERYONE I work with, except for my superior, constantly tells me how shitty the job is, how bad their life is, how much they hate the job, how it doesn't pay enough for them to care....I'm almost in shock. The place where my friend works pays LESS than my current assignment, but the people have a huge amount of pride, accomplishment and they LIKE their job....I even have less to do, it's less "dangerous", and it's 90% indoors.
Sure, it's a peon job...but it has a certain level of respect and pride along with it. A certain level of brotherhood with the fellow workers. Unfortunately, NONE of my coworkers have ANY. I'm not going to request reassignment because I like the client company and it's a VERY easy job (almost so easy it's boring)....but I think everyone there needs to get canned or get a swift kick in the pants.
We're supposed to get there at least 15 mins before the shift begins so we can pass along the proper information, get settled, etc. The guy who came on after me shows up 10 minutes late (as in, 10 mins past when my shift ends...not from when he's SUPPOSED to get there). I was told (by the person I was replacing) that he's NEVER on time...and I should ALWAYS expect him 10-15 mins late. This is TOTALLY unacceptable to me...even going beyond the obvious reasons, I need to be somewhere else for another job right afterwards. It's pretty far, so seconds count when traveling.
I'm so frustrated about this...I WANT to enjoy the job, but everyone else there is making that impossible. I'm either angry because they just don't care or I'm depressed because I hear their sad sob stories.

Well, if you went to a job you hated too, I doubt you'd have any ambition take it seriously and would goof off when possible. I know you like it, but they certainly don't.
The current place I'm at is similar for me. 5.80/hour = unacceptable pay rate, but since nobody will hire me, I have to pretend I have some liking of it.

Sounds like a good enough reason to love the job to me.

Sounds like you need to let out some agression. Play two games of Half-Life and call me in the morning.

Work ethics died when corporations and companies started to treat all of their employess like shit. Simple as that. If the company cares for you, you'll care about the company. It rarely works like that anymore.

I'll be nice about this. You are somewhat disillusioned about the current miliatary. I will not deny that the military and its particular branches do indeed have infantry and the sole purpose of the infantry is to kill the enemy. The military itself specializes in warfare and killing its enemies whether it is defensive or offensive.
That being said, 90% of all the soldiers in the modern military are behind the lines doing all sorts of wonderfully advanced technical jobs, especially in branches like the Navy, and Air Force. Most "soldiers", such as myself, will never see combat because of the advanced degree of technical expertise that their job requires. So to sum everything up, the minority of people in the military ever "blow the fuck out of some people" because when doing that, there is a chance fire will be returned.
You can love or hate the military all you want, but be realistic. In the modern world, without a military, we'd be eaten alive.

It seems the larger the company, the more inflated the managers egos and superiority complex they have. A "you did a good job today" or a pat on the back works wonders and doesn't take much effort. When full-time work becomes a complete chore and doesn't have any hint of happiness anywhere, then the workers are going to hate it. I mean, honestly, how hard is friendly conversation in a work environment? Instead, they get yelled at.

My older brother is currently in the Navy Seabees. He's stationed up in Little Creek Amphibious Naval Base, Virginia. He's supposed to be deployed to Guatemala some time in the future. Do you think he'll see any action? I doubt it.
He's a crane operator, BTW.

Wow, I grew up right in that area. Most of my early childhood memories are on that base. Small world.

One of my best friends is in the Seabees (CB = Construction Battalion) and he is stationed in Gulfport Mississippi. He was actually deployed to Iraq and came back without a scratch. He didnt even see any combat, he just built stuff for the Marines.
I have not yet met a Seabee I didnt like.

And it should be unacceptable to your boss also, if you have to be somewhere then leave a note for him and then leave and if he complains to the boss then say that if the guy could show up to work on time there wouldn't be a problem. You shouldn't ever have to stay late because of someone else's problems and if you're staying late then I highly recommend that you have your boss sign off this as valid overtime since this is your time. And make sure to punch out as late as possible since it's not your fault you're punching out late at all.

I take a great deal of pride in what I do. My dad always said anything worth doing is worth doing well.
I don't think I could work with people like you're describing. You're right, work ethics, for the most part, are a thing of the past.
