I'm up there ringing out a guy's bottle of water. It costs 99?¢, but tax took it up to $1.07. He goes: "There's TAX on that!?" I say "Yes." He says, "Well, this is what we get for electing that god damn Nixon and his fascist party. Jesus." He digs out another 7 cents and stomps out.

I just found this highly amusing. For those who don't know, in Ohio there is no tax on FOOD items (except in non-carry out restaurants I believe). I would be killed in other states if I had to pay tax on food.

Fairfax county VA, 4% on purchased goods, and an additional .5% for food, so when i go to the grocery store i get some dumb shit like 4% tax $1.12; 4.5% tax $2.45 that kinda pissed me off when i found that out.

Ahh, a fellow Virginian. I've honestly never thought our sales tax is so bad. I believe it was around 7% in either North Carolina or Tennessee... I can't quite remember.

7%? I fucking wish. Sales tax is currently around 10% in Tennessee.

new york's sales tax differs by area. down in new york, it's at 8.625% (that right, isildur?), while up north it can be 8.25, 8, and where i am, 7.00%

i believe the tax applies to non-food, and supposed non-nutritious food items (like a fuckin' candy bar). there's no tax on stuff like aspirin, or other medications, but there is on vitamins. it's very annoying.

Then it was when I was in Nashville that I saw that ridiculous sales tax. I think NC is around 6.5%?

Ohio is funny. There is state tax which went up last year I think from 5 to 6% and then there is a "county" tax, between 1-2% AND THEN some counties have a "transit" tax which is usually 0.5%. Depending on where you are you need to add up the crap.

Scioto County for example: 6% + 1.5% cty + 0% transit = 7.5% sales tax.

It's a bitch to calculate those whenever you are on the go.

Doesn't 99¢ + 7¢ = $1.06?

taxes round UP to the nearest cent. It was prolly 7.5% which will make it about 7.000000000000000000001 cents but it's 8 cents :P

It's just the opposite in Montana. We have no sales tax whatsoever, yet we have really high state income taxes.
