Scribblenauts for the Nintendo DS came out today. I was wondering how many have decided to pick it up? It's a pretty interesting game, I can't think of any game that's really like it that I've played. Mostly gameplay consists of using words to create objects to solve the puzzle or get to the goal in the level. I want to talk about it some, I'm hoping that some who might be on the fence will get interested if I do (also, anyone who has played it, curious to hear of any of your more bizzare solutions to puzzles).

For example...this was one of the action levels (meaning it's more goal oriented rather than puzzle oriented). In each level you need to get a Starite. It's this star looking thing. This level had it at the end of a narrow tunnel Maxwell (the kid you play as) could never get into. There was also a steel box (steel = indestructible in this game) in front of it, with a narrow gap in front of it. All of this was on a cliff with a steep drop. You can't jump up there with just your normal jumping abilities.

Now, the obvious solution (the one they hinted at) was to use rope, tie one end to the star, another to the box, then use another rope to tie something heavy to the box and pull it down off of the cliff, bringing the star with it. Great, that works.

In advanced mode though, you need to finish the level three times, but you can't use the items you used in each try in any of the subsequent tries. I had some trouble with this one, it led to some amusingly strange methods of getting that star for me.

First I did the rope thing, but the second stumped me for a bit. Then, my eventual solution was to glue the star to a butterfly, that then managed to struggle it's way out of the tunnel to where I could reach the star. The third try was my favorite by far. I suddenly decided to try Shrink Ray as a phrase, and poof, shrink ray. I first tried giving it to a robot, the robot just stood around and didn't shoot me, so I tried to think of something that would try to kill me. I decided on a Vampire.

So, I gave myself rocket boots so I could jump really high, then made the vampire and gave him the shrink ray. He shot at me, I shrunk, and with my rocket powered boots I jumped onto the cliff, over the box, and into the tunnel. :P

Had me laughing for at least ten minutes. :retardedlol:

Shrink-ray-wielding vampire, lol, nice.

I used to do a tonne of acid in the 90's... perhaps this is the game my 8-Dimensional Brain has always been looking for =>

Sounds interesting. Maybe I'll have to take a look at it.

Okay, so I just started playing this. So far, it's completely awesome. Also, I haven't actually clicked start yet. You can just write things and interact with them on the title screen. My favourite so far has been using my light sabre (have to type laser sword) to attack a mech while riding on a giraffe.

Also, xkcd weren't kidding when they said you can summon the large hadron collider (http://xkcd.com/637/).

Oh, and I just summoned an oven and put a cat in it. (You can't put things in the microwave. :( )

Ha almost as good as the wormhole that summon some intergalactic monster that killed Maxwell. Or the random teleporter to the moon, I'll need to get back to you on the usefulness of a dwarf star. And yes indeed the goggles they do nothing. It's very random sometimes

I summoned a flood once. I died pretty quick. I wonder if I could do "Ark" or "Submarine" first.

Sounds like when I summoned an Atom Bomb and then activated it. Silly me thinking the blast wouldn't kill me and would only take out the wall I was trying to blow up.

Scuba gear. :)

Actually, you can get a Diving Helmet, so that could work.

Whale. I summoned one and rode on it except I was too stupid to summon an ocean to go with it, so it just sort of sat there and wiggled.

I have no idea about Wrecking Ball, but yeah, all the others are there. Rocket Launcher is a good one too, and earlier I discovered that 'Mech' works, and gives you about what you'd expect. :)

Woah woah woah! I'm hours away from getting rid of my DS forever and so far today I've seen like a billion posts about this game. Is it really that good cuz now I'm curious.

It is pretty neat. Basically you get handed a puzzle, and are told to solve it. This could mean you give a character an item, find a way to get to the star, or have to fight off zombies or something to get the star. There are a lot of levels.

In each level, you can create objects by typing out something's name. Not pronouns or brands or anything though. You could do say...rope and elephant. You could put the rope onto the elephant and then attatch the other end to something else and use him to pull away a blockage or something for example.

Really, it's as much fun as you make it in a way. I'm personally pretty fond of the game. :) It's especially satisfying when you think of an oddly creative way to solve a puzzle (like my vampire/shrink ray/rocket boots combo).

Hah, well good choice. What sorts of games do you like, by the way? Maybe I can suggest something else you haven't tried.

Heh...ummmm...uhhh...yeah. :erm: Well I have a M3 DS Real flashcard with a 4GB microsd so I've tried just about everything.

I tried the submarine with the flood. I died. Same with "nuke." Any idea what defeats a tornado? I can't get past it.

Second Tornado, or attach the starite to a Meteorologist and screw getting yourself over there. Meteorologist just love those things. Or maybe you could grapple over or use a cow or something like that.

I had troubles with that one in Advanced mode. Easiest solution I could find though is to create a shelter, then place it where the Tornado is. Jump into it, then run out once the tornado is far enough past you. If it's the one I think it is, I somehow managed to get myself past it by grappling onto those metal blocks too with a grappling hook.

Oh, and my third solution IIRC was to shrink the tornado with a shrink ray. I NEVER thought this would work, but the tornado shrunk, sure enough.

Oh, a Meteorologist...I never even thought of anything like that. Nice one. :)

I tried a tank. But, apparently, black holes, "everything," "nothing," and anti-matter all create black holes which will kill tornadoes. You can also ride certain slow and short animals through, like cows and "gnu." I don't really like how bridges work, I think they should be designed to attach to the two places you want the bridge to cover, then spawn in between.

Reaper man
09-29-2009, 07:43 AM
wouldn't anti matter have the same effect as a nuclear bomb?

jdev
09-29-2009, 08:13 PM
No. Mixing antimatter and matter should destroy both. A black hole, on the other hand, should destroy everything. I only tried black hole and everything against the tornado, though.

Yeah it is. I stopped buying games for a while because they were all the same UT/SF etc clone just rehashed, then we got the wii and the DS and I've bought more games for the wii in the past week then I did in two years of first having my Xbox. Also played Super Smash Bros Brawl with The 9th Sage last night and had a blast, even my wife is enjoying it and she doesnt normally do games other then mahjonng and such!

Yeah it was, we could set up a zmd tournament or something one night. I dont think I've had that much fun playing a game online in years and that includes all those times of Unreal Tournament/UT2k4 over the years.
