Lately I've been reading a lot of textfiles. I can't begin to describe the amount of information that they hold. It's amazing to read the unadulterated thoughts of people who've come before us, like a moment in time preserved within a simple document.

I have the total http://wavefist.photojunkie.net/ibft-mirror.htmlI Bleed For This site mirrored on mine, since their official site is now nothing more than an advertisement for webspace and search engines. That's sad and so fucking ironic that you have to laugh in an effort not to cry.

The internet that we all enjoy is being turned into a gigantic advertisement and home shopping network under our noses, with our culture being erased in an effort to pave the way for PROFIT$$$ and the only thing we do about it is ignore it. We need to remind ourselves where our roots lie, and they lie in the world of BBSes and the early internet days.

Okay. Let me sum this up.

I was really too young back in the 80's to partake in the BBS scene, but I imagine it was addictive like web boards today. I do remember back in '94 when my family was one of the first families in our neighborhood to get internet access. Ever since then, I've been an online junkie. It's crazy how much time we waste searching for things to read, games to play, etc.

Yeah, same here. I did catch the end of the BBS scene though. It had a special quality that you don't get from being on a web board. It's not something that you stumble onto, like with a search engine, it's actually dialing to someone's house and being on their box.

Plus it was totally flooded with warez. That's what ended up getting a lot of boards stung by the feds and shut down, thus putting the end of the BBS era into motion.

I was talking to someone late one night on IRC, and we both thought that starting up an old school BBS would be a cool idea. However, without a second phone line, that wouldn't work. I'll have to get the money together to pay for something like that.

For now, I'm thinking about starting up a web BBS on my site. I'll make sure to link directly to it, like I did with the IBFT mirror, cause of the more prudish among us not enjoying ascii pr0n.
