Obama being assasinated would not get the damned news coverage that Micheal Jackson's death is...I don't care if he was inhaling air conditioner freon and freebasing bleach. Yes he was talented and yes he was a major influence in the music world.
But between Neverland, all the accusations, Marilyn Monroe's ashes, the elephant man's bones and now that nut Al Sharpton saying "the media's depicting him like he's a freak", I've had enough boys and girls.
God, please make it all go away.

Obama being assasinated....
For a second there, I thought I missed a very important piece of news. o.o
Anyway, was John Lennon's death covered this much? You're old enough to know. Do you think that his death would be covered this much if he died today instead of 29 years ago?

I just hope this damn thing passes quickly.

Not nearly as much as Jackson's is...which shows the generational change in what people consider to be either important or influential in their lives...Sharpton, to his credit, was not off the mark when he suggested that Jackson deserves the same respect that Sinatra got.
I'll admit it...I still own some of his recordings, but more of him and his brothers.

He died on June 26 or 27, the same day that Farrah Fawcet died who did really didn't get any media attention compared to Michael.

...except, as far as I know, Sinatra managed to just touch people's hearts, not their little kids.
I'm not against people enjoying Jackson's music, but for me, the way people are so willing to shove the ugly deeds aside, and still adoringly look up to the man himself and wildly praise him without reservation, is... troubling. It seems to me to bear a message of "there's no act so despicable that it can't be fully outweighed (in many people's hearts) by being talented and successful". There are some actions that really do merit the loss of people's respect for a person, no matter what superstar status you've reached.
Eh. In any case, I'll be glad when this takes away less air-time/newspaper-space from more significant matters...

Defenders say that he wasn't convicted so now its water under the bridge in his death. I dunno.
Also seems to be a bit of a racial thing because from what i have witnessed on TV, blacks view him as something of an MLK who opened the doors for other blacks to make millions of dollars also. Which is a noble thing for people with such aspirations. Probably the rest of us are wondering how he changed the world in a more relevant policy-based way for the common citizen.
Granted he changed the pop world.

Amen to that. I think, besides the millions of fans, the other huge proponent to this phenom is the media knowing this story has staying power - what with the ongoing battle over the kids and estate and all sorts of less newsworthy items that are sure to be shoved down the public's throat for years to come.
Of course the issue with the media is much broader than MJ. I also wish more network and cable news time was spent on real issues, but unfortunately we live in a society that somehow, perhaps coercively, gives a shit about even the most mundane of celebrity.
