I have no idea how to hack roms but I'm a huge NBA fan and playing NBA Jam on an emulator has been very fun for me. I wanted to know if it was possible to hack the NBA Jam game to update the teams to include newer players. If anyone is interested in helping can someone reply?

liiiike, change the roster, or actually add players to an existing team (ie 21 players in a team instead of 20)

It should be pretty easy to just change the roster, like their names and graphics.
If you want to change their stats too, that could be a little bit more complicated.

Like actually changing the rosters and preferably their stats. I know with NBA Jam TE more stuff is added (more players on a roster, more stats, actual numerical value for stats) but I have no idea if it is harder. For the stats I've had some experience dbf editing on NBA Live which is basically just changing the values but I have no idea how SNES hacking works. I can easily compile a list of players that I want included but I just don't know how the technical part works.

Well, changing their names is easy.
If you can't find the stats data, you could always try to match current players with the old ones' stats.

Is that an easy thing to do? Any guides or anything?

I'd recommend starting with The Definitive Guide to ROM Hacking for Complete Beginners (http://www.zophar.net/fileuploads/2/10612wpdma/rhnewbfaq.txt). It will point you in the direction of things to learn to accomplish what you're wanting to do.
(Full disclosure, I'm the author of said guide, but I've had enough positive feedback on it that I don't think I'm being overly egotistical in recommending it.)
