I'm in the 3rd dungeon, and I'm a little lost, so I press select in order to see the map. Then, I press down to change floor. Bam, the game freeze, nothing to do. It might not freeze always at the same place, but it's always when changing floors in a dungeon map.
Anyone have an idea on what might be the cause of this ?

it would help to know what emulator you are using ;p

Ah, well, true that is. I'm using both VisualBoyAdvance 1.7.2 and VisualBoyAdvance CE (Faster with some GBA games) I've tried many roms, they all do the same thing.

never tried it personally myself, but have you given mendafen (or however you spell it) a go?

I wouldn't really trust a multi system emulator such as Medafen - usually everything they emulate isn't as good as standalones.
KiGB or Gambatte are the *best* for GBC emulators. KiGB has the best overall compatibility and feature support, while Gambatte focuses on clock cycle accuracy / closest to original GBC etc.

I remember Lillymon swearing by it and that it's accurate, etc., so it may not be as bad as you think. I'm too lazy to find it and a front end for it though. You'd think that someone who could code and emulator could easily code a GUI to go with it. ;/

The problem seems to be with the Visualboy code. It might also be a problem with the rom or with the emulation of that specific routine. Since it's most likely that the Game Boy code for VBA was not re-worked in its several releases, I'd say it's the VBA emulator. It would be better that you used a Game Boy emulator instead of a GBA one. Besides the options mentioned by BIrvine, I also suggest you BGB. We should add some kind of rating in order to let people know which emulators are their best options for each system.

We already have that actually - just check the 'popular' button in the admin section. That's why emulators like Nestopia, FCEU, VirtuaNES, etc are on the top like the NES section. BGB was the best a few years back, but I've done side by side tests and its not quite as good. (Its GUI is good, and 3rd place out of 60+ emus certainly isn't bad, though!)

Hm...have you tried it in VBA-M? It's a newer, improved version of the old Visual Boy Advance.

has VBA-M gotten past its "I need a shitload of runtime libraries" phase yet?

Actually, I don't remember, I just know that it's defnitely better than other versions of VBA I've tried.

The important thing in this case is to know if the Game Boy code has been improved in VBA-M, no just the GBA part.

Emulators that are no longer developed tend to stop being a good option in comparison with newers, as it happened with Nesticle. I'm not quite convinced by the popularity system. For example, KiGB is an excellent emulator but I know it has some issues regarding in which hardware and software it runs, while BGB pretty much works in any decent Windows system with minimum effort in the configuration. NO$GMB is an excellent emulator, probably the best regarding the usage of system resources, and it has several features that other GB emulators don't, such as the link ability. Of course the 3 of them would be in the popular system classification, but if I have an old version of Windows, or a 64bit system, I doubt I'll be able to chose which one to use based in the popularity system. And in the case of NO$GMB, it doesn't have a full functionality unless it is a registered version, which hinders it in a popularity system, regardless of how good or bad as an emulator is. I don't know, perhaps I'm expecting too much of a rating system.
